Steve Vai

Every Kid I knew growing up had role models or heros. Some had Michael Jordan, others had Wayne Gretzky, and so on,and so on.Growing up dealing with going to a new junior high school trying to fit in with everyone, and my parents getting a divorce it was pretty tough for an 11 year old.I wasn’t that much into sports, and I couldn’t relate to much of what other kids were doing. Then one day after school I came home and watched MTV.There it was,a defining moment that would change the rest of my life.I already knew how to play guitar a little bit.But I never really took it seriously until that day. There was a video from David Lee Roth.It was for the song Yankee Rose. And even though it was just a video for most people,it made me make a huge decision.I wanted to play guitar more than ever.It seemed like fitting in with other kids, and the problems an 11 year old had didn’t matter too much to me.I had to learn everything about Steve Vai’s playing.Eventually I learned parts of his songs, and it made me practice a lot.In my teens it was still all about Steve Vai,and now it still is.
I got to meet him and get my picture taken with him at the Namm Show in 1995.He was the coolest guy you could meet.He signed every autograph for his fans.I saw him play a bunch of times, and was blown away everytime. He always captured his audience. If it wasn’t for Steve Vai I would not be where I am today.

I’m a big fan of Steve Vai, too and have almost all of his CD’s. Vai is truly one of the big guns and his sound still dominates. It’s amazing how much your playing sounds like his. I bought your CD from Guitar 9 last year and am still blown away. Good job! Great sound!

Thank you I’m glad you like The CD.I think the song “Fear Of The Dark” reminds me a lot of Steve Vai’s playing. He is my all time favorite.Everytime he puts a cd out, to me it’s like he reinvented the guitar again.I have his new cd and the first track trips me out because of the sound he has.

Hey Randy,
Nice blog!!
My first Steve Vai came from when GP Mag had those little “Soundsheet” vinyl records in each issue. They had a soundsheet of “The Attitude Song”. Steve was also playing with Zappa in those days. He had a cool little column in GP for awhile and was the first to transpose Allen Holdsworth solos that were published there. By the time he showed up in the movie “Crossroads”, I was a big fan.
Stop by my blog anytime and say hi!
best,
JP
